Campuses around the country are full of reports of campus legends and haunting. Minnesota State University Moorhead is no exception to these stories passed down from class to class, year after year. The most popular these tales at MSUM is that of the ghost of Weld Hall. In fact, the reputed haunting at Weld Hall is so well known that the University even mentions the Weld Hall Ghost on the University web-site.

The Story Behind The Ghost Of Weld Hall

There are variations in the stories about why weld Hall is haunted. They go something like this:  Some years ago a construction worker, janitor, or maintenance man either 1) fell off the roof and onto the stage while constructing the building, 2) fell off a ladder inside the auditorium, or 3) fell down one of the spiral stairways behind the stage. Upon suffering one of the above fates, the man broke his legs and neck. His body was not discovered until the following Monday by coworkers. Now he haunts the building and is reported to appear on the stage and throughout the building without his legs. The ghost of Weld Hall has also been known to chase security guards out of the building late at night during routine checks.

The Investigations

Plains Paranormal investigated Weld hall on four separate occasions in 2006 and 2007.  Among the equipment we brought to investigate Weld Hall was a Video Camera, digital voice recorders, and digital cameras. We spent each investigation looking for evidence in the Auditorium, spiral staircase, (There are two stair cases but one in blocked off preventing access) hallways, and various class rooms. Upon reviewing all the video and audio evidence, Plains Paranormal found nothing to substantiate the claims of paranormal activity taking place in Weld Hall.

Conclusion

Although Plains Paranormal did not obtain any EVPs or video footage of an apparition at Weld Hall, there were a few personal experiences.  Rachael and Joe, while investigating alone, both heard what sounded like footsteps on the stage during one of the investigations. Upon checking the area, nobody was there. Also, all members reported a different feel to being by the stage in the auditorium. Members of Plains Paranormal do not claim to be sensitive to the paranormal, but the heavy feeling by the stage area could not be ignored by any of us. Also, the personal accounts from campus security guards could not be ignored. Several had claimed to see shadow people moving up and down the hallways of the building including our own investigator, Mandy. She wrote up her account of seeing a figure:

At approximately 1:00am I was standing outside of Weld Hall, the front doors, waiting to be let in as the doors are locked at night. I sent a text message to Joe to let him know I had arrived and a few moments after it had been sent I saw, from the corner of my eye, someone coming down the stairs.
I assumed it was Joe until I looked at it dead on. It was a black mass in the shape of a person. It was halfway down the stairs when I saw it. Its left hand/arm was on the railing and its right hand/arm was at its side. It walked down the stairs, I blinked and it was gone.

All other witnesses seemed to be honest, sincere, and asked to remain anonymous. Plains Paranormal could not find any evidence to support the claim that a man died in Weld Hall years ago, so the stories of the weld Hall ghost will be told for years to come.  Plains Paranormal believes that if weld Hall is haunted, it is most likely a residual haunt.  Plains Paranormal has no plans to go back to Weld Hall in the future and conduct another investigation.
